How do payment gateways work on e-commerce marketplaces

Payment gateways in e-commerce marketplaces or blogs play a crucial role in enabling secure transactions between buyers and sellers. Here is how they generally work:

Buyer Makes a Purchase:

  • The buyer selects a product or service and proceeds to the checkout page on the marketplace or blog.

Payment Information Input:

  • On the checkout page, the buyer enters their payment details (credit/debit card information, digital wallets, etc.).

Payment Gateway Integration:

  • The marketplace or blog uses a payment gateway service (like Stripe, PayPal, Square, etc.) that securely handles the payment transaction.
  • The payment gateway serves as an intermediary between the buyer, the seller, and the financial institutions involved (such as banks or card networks).

Encryption & Authentication:

  • It may also require additional authentication steps (like 3D Secure) to verify the buyer’s identity, adding a layer of security.
  • The payment gateway encrypts the payment data to protect it from cyber threats and fraud.

Authorization Request:

The payment gateway sends the payment request to the buyer’s bank or card issuer to verify that the buyer has sufficient funds or credit for the transaction.

If everything checks out (the account is valid and there are enough funds), the bank authorizes the transaction.

Payment Confirmation:

  • If successful, the marketplace updates the order status and informs the seller that the buyer has paid. If declined, the buyer is usually asked to provide an alternative payment method.
  • The payment gateway communicates back to the marketplace or blog, confirming whether the payment was successful or declined.

Funds Transfer:

  • The payment gateway helps transfer funds from the buyer’s bank or payment method to the seller’s account.
  • This can take a few days depending on the payment method used.

Transaction Completion:

  • Once the payment is processed, both the buyer and seller are notified that the transaction has been completed, and the product or service is typically shipped or provided.
